Family – Making Healthy Decisions Together
by Beth Dierkhising, RD, LD, Certified Personal Trainer

The fast paced lifestyle of a typical American family has made it more difficult for good healthy habits to be a priority at home. All habits and routines that children learn start right at home from watching how their parents live. The growing number of American children who are overweight and obese is a huge concern for this country. Some experts believe that if this obesity trend among children continues, our current generation could become the first in American history to live shorter lives than their parents.

For families that want to make lasting positive changes, it is vital that the family work together to achieve their goals. Here are five steps a family can take together.

•    Regular Physical Activity As a family, you need to talk about what activities you can do together that you all enjoy. Activities that children enjoy such as ice skating, horse-back riding, tennis, rollerblading, and biking.
•    Choose Healthy Snacks There are a lot of options available for healthy choices. Children need to learn to view food as nourishment and energy that our bodies require to work properly.
•    Limit Screen Time This means more than just the television. Computers, video games, and cell phones.
•    Set Achievable Goals In regards to nutrition, activity and lifestyle habits, you need to take some steps.
•    Family Meal Time is also an important piece of wellness.  Planning out meals in advance and prepping ahead of time can help avoid the frequent fast food stops that many families have made a habit of.  According to the Center for Disease Control, nearly one-third of American children, ages 4 to 19, eat fast food daily. This daily habit can contribute to a 6 lb weight increase a year per child.  A nutritious, home-cooked meal can be ready in a matter of minutes if menu planning is taken into consideration.  If you take the time to gather your family together at an evening meal you will find that your children likely have so much to share with you.

Obesity is the second leading preventable killer among our population behind smoking.  As parents you would never consider handing your child a cigarette.  Why then do you allow so many non-nutritious foods and beverages into their bodies?  The fact is that children need more activity and less high sugar and high fat foods. Parents are in control of your child’s well-being and you can make the difference in their health habits. If you practice healthy habits yourself, your children will likely follow your example.
