Can Video Games Count as Exercise?

Not long ago, playing video games provided good exercise for kids’ thumbs -- and not much else. Now, a new generation of more active video games, like Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) and Wii Sports, is changing that. Whether it’s using the latest in virtual-reality technology to mimic fast-paced dance sequences or simulate sports moves like swinging a racket or throwing a punch, these games have caught the attention of adults, who may not have been interested in running around a fantasy video-game world -- or may have done so only to humor their kids.

Crunchy Yogurt Breakfast Bowl

Add ground flaxseed, crunchy cereal and plain, unflavored yogurt (plain contains more calcium and protein than flavored yogurt), and you’ll start your day with a powerful punch of protein, fiber and omega-3s (from the flaxseed). All you need to round out this breakfast-in-a-bowl is some fresh fruit or a glass of 100% fruit juice. Make sure the flaxseed is ground; you won’t absorb the nutrients from whole seeds. (read more...)

A kitchen is much more than just a kitchen -- in most homes, it's the hub of family life. Here, she offers tips on making your kitchen more organized and safe.

Take stock "What I suggest to clients," says Norcross, "is to think of how you live and move around in your kitchen. Take a week and really pay attention to what you typically do." Strange Fruit

Lately I’ve been comparing apples and oranges, only to come to a troubling conclusion: boring! This wouldn’t be a problem if the USDA’s ubiquitous “5 A Day” fruit and vegetable recommendation didn’t entail two servings of fruit a day. Thus, I decided that if I was going to make the grade, I’d have to look beyond the usual suspects. Turns out there are more choices than I could possibly carry home. (read more...)

Yeah right! (read more...)

Need a Break? Meditate!

Meditation is a powerful way to relieve stress. It's calming because it connects us to the emotions we're cut off from during our daily routines, according to Sharon Salzberg, a teacher at the Insight Meditation Center in Barre, Mass. Skeptical? You don't need to fill a room with candles and New Age-y music to do it. And ten minutes a day is enough time to reap the rewards. (read more...)

Learn To Be a Smart Online Investor

Everyone's heard stories about people who gave up their day jobs to spend more time investing in the stock market. Shanna Rendon, of Grand Junction, Colo., is one of those daredevils. A few years ago, Rendon left her job as a cancer cell researcher and began managing her family's investments full time. And all she needed was the Internet and the family computer.

"All the investing I do is online," says Rendon, who also teaches classes for Better Investing (better-investing.org), a nonprofit community that helps people manage their investments.
